About the owner
Hey y'all. I'm Tim Nichols.
You may know me from my popular mail-order Japanese maple nursery, MrMaple.com. If you Google me you'll find videos, podcasts, magazine articles, and TV shows about that business. I have always loved gardening — but my passion for fire-bellied toads runs just as deep.
Growing up with fire-bellies
Growing up I always dreamed of becoming a herpetologist. Back then fire-bellied toads were everywhere — many were wild-caught and sold in pet stores across the US. Once it became clear that wild collection could spread disease, importing fire-bellies became illegal. That created an opening for breeders like me to focus on captive-bred Bombina orientalis and ship them through mail order.
As a kid, I took care of fire-bellied toads and found them easy and entertaining. They have such personality — the perfect pet frog for beginners and a delightful choice for experienced amphibian lovers. I learned fast that they are escape artists. I got pretty good at finding the ones that snuck out of the tank, checking corners and anything they could crawl under. Feeding them crickets and small floating pellets was always a joy.
Tree frogs. Dart frogs. Back to fire-bellies.
Later, as a married adult, I decided to keep pet frogs again, starting with red-eyed tree frogs. Stunning in photos — but that's where the appeal ended. Many tree frogs are still collected from the wild and often arrive diseased. Even captive-bred ones are nocturnal, hiding all day and noisy at night. My wife complained, I tried beach towels and timed lights, and eventually gave up.
Next I tried dart frogs, starting with Dendrobates leucomelas — the classic beginner dart. Interesting, but limited to 3–4 per 75-gallon tank due to aggression, with constant misting maintenance, and they mostly hide except at feeding time.
So I came back to fire-bellies. Yes, I just called them both a frog and a toad in the same paragraph. I remembered how easy and enjoyable they were. I set up a tank and fell right back in love. Filtration means less frequent water changes. They're active during the day. They have distinct personalities and will sometimes eat directly from my hand. Drop crickets or fruit flies in and the whole aquarium erupts. You can keep several together as long as they're similar size, well-fed, and well-filtered.
My young son Waylon loves them too — and that's what inspired me to start this mail-order business specializing in fire-bellied toads.
A note on legitimacy
Why I'm telling you all this.
Because there are scams out there — fake Facebook pages and profiles claiming to sell the frogs you want. I want you to know Tim Nichols and Firebellytoads.com are real. I'm also the owner of MrMaple.com and BuchholzNursery.com. Real businesses, real history, real frogs.
